Early and Modern Mode of Transport

LI: To correctly draw and label a diagram

Today we were looking at the change of early and the modern mode of transport. We labeled the different parts of one of the land, sea, rail, and air. We also chose to do one of which were the interior, outside, or the engine.

Give each example for the differences between the two. I found this task interesting because I was able to learn the improvments between the early and modern transportation.

An interesting fact I learnt during this activity was that on the Dreamliner, there is an elevator that takes people to the second storey of the plane.

Evolution of Transportation

LI: To identify how technology has changed when we consider how it was fit for purpose.

Today we were looking at the change of technology. Over the past 100 years, technology has changed in order to make things easier. This is called fit for purpose. Transportation devices have become more convenient compared to their initial design.

An example of fit for purpose is that trains are fit for purpose as both 1922 and 2022 trains were both used to transport people or heavy objects from one place to another. I found this task interesting because I saw a varierty of improvments from transportation 100 years ago compare to now. An interesting fact I learnt during this activity was that there are still trains that run on coal to this day.

March Girls Strike 1888

LI: To identify the significance of the Match Girls Strick of 1888

Today we had a session with David, our PB4L leader. He was teaching us about the match girls strike of 1888. This Strike of 1888 explains the hardships that the match girls went through, this eventually led to a protest trying to raise awareness for women who don’t get appreciate their hard work by not getting paid.

I found this task interesting because I was able to learn why match girls went on strike. An interesting fact I learnt was that the wording on the banners they used were to help draw attention from others to join their protest and sign their petition.

Transportation

LI: To identify the 4 different modes (types) of transport and their changes over time.

The 4 different modes of transport are air, land, sea and rail. We explored more about the types of transportation and how they have evolved over time to build an understanding of how humanity makes changes to vehicles like cars, boats, trains and planes.

An example of air, land, sea and rail based vehicles are planes, car, ferry, and trains.

I found this task interesting because I was able to learn new facts about air, land, sea, and rail transportation. An interesting fact I learnt during this activity was that air and sea transportations are usally used to transport things from one country to another.

Symbols

LI: To create a labelled diagram (information picture)

This week we have been learning the main reasons behind using the celebration symbols. We used our researching skills to find the key ideas behind the celebration. The purpose of this activity is to help us learn what the symbols mean and how and why they are used it that celebration.

I found this activity fun because I was able to learn all different symbols for each celebration.

Mapping Celebration

LI: To understand that celebrations cross the cultural barriers around the world

This week we have been looking at where different celebrations are held around the world. We used our smart searching skills to locate countries/places where Hannukah, Kwanzaa, Eid, Christmas and Diwali are celebrated. The objective of this activity was to build an understanding of how despite cultural barriers, people should still respect and acknowledge other celebrations.

I found this activity surprising because attempting this activity showed me how many different celebrations that are celebrated world wide.

Celebration

LI: To determine our prior knowledge of celebrations

This week we were looking at celebrations and what we already understand about them. We know that there are different types of celebrations that different people acknowledge and participate in. However, there are many more specific celebrations that people hold sacred to themselves.

Celebration is a type of event where groups of people acknowledge a holiday or something significant to them or their religion/culture. There can be two types of celebrations. One type of celebration is a religious holiday or religious time, the other type of celebration is a non-religious marking. For example: a religious celebration is like Diwali or Eid. A non-religious marking is like a birthday, mothers day, fathers day or graduation. These are all considered types of celebration.

These are some practices people do during different celebrations or markings; During Eid, Muslims come together and pray in the morning and then go to celebrate Eid throughout the rest of the day. During Christmas, people put out some cookies and milk to ‘feed’ father Christmas/Santa. During birthdays, people recieve presents and a birthday cake.

I enjoyed this activity because I am familiar with many celebrations and have a lot of prior knowledge to do with celebrations.

Healthy Relationships

LI: To understand how a healthy relationship has a positive impact.

This week our Inquiry lesson was focused on showing how we think healthy relationships can have a positive impact.

n our DLO, we showed how healthy relationships can impact something in a positive manner and what healthy relationships are to us. We all have different opinions on healthy relationships and what we think it could have an impact on.

This activity was interesting because I was able to share what qualities I look for in a relationship.

Relationships

LI: To understand the roles in a relationship and understand what a working partnership looks like

To help us understand the vocabulary in this task we defined each word then worked collaboratively to ‘tell me, show me and explain to me’ what these words mean.

This activity was helpful because it showed me what you could be in a good relationship.

How Aotearoa came to be

LI: To digitally design the North and South Island based on how they were described in the story

We watched the story of how Maūi fished up the North Island and how his voyage to visit his mother Papatūānuku resulted in the creation of the South Island. Our challenge was to digitally design the North and South Island based on how the Myth and Legend depicted them to look.

Click here if you want to watch the story

This activity was  interesting because I was able to learn more about the Maori culture.
