Summer Learning Journey | Week 4: Activity 2: Poetry Slam Wha- Blackout Poem

Today I have completed another Summer Learning Journey activity. The Summer Learning Journey is a program that helps students keep learning throughout the Summer holidays.

I decided to attempt the kick start. For this poetry slam activity, I needed to write blackout poem. I first watched all the videos to help me understand the activity. Once I finished watching the videos, I got started on the activity. To complete this activity, I needed to find a magizine or some newspaper. By using a vivid, I started blackout the page. I kept and circled the words I wanted to keep and blacked out the rest of the page. Lastly, I used the words I kept to make it a poem.

I found this activity a bit challenging because I found it hard to find some words that would be good to use in the poem.

Summer Learning Journey | Week 3: Activity 8: Tanagram Tangles

Today I have completed another Summer Learning Journey activity. The Summer Learning Journey is a program that helps students keep learning throughout the Summer holidays.

I decided to attempt the step it up activity. I first watched all the videos to help me understand the activity. Once I finished watching all videos, I got started on the activity. To complete this activity, I needed to use the shapes of a tanagram to create pictures that represent summer.

The images I made were a house, heart, and a bird. The house picture represents the home we’re able to go to in the summer hoidays. The heart picture represents the things you love to do during the summer. The bird picture represents that amount of birds me and my family feed during the summer in our backyard.

I found this activity a bit challenging because I found it it a bit hard to create the images using the shapes provided from the tanagram.

Summer Learning Journey | Week 3: Activity 4: Raranga Pepa

Ka mutu taku matakitaki i nga riipene whakaata katoa, ka hoki ano ahau ki te riipene tohutohu mo te raranga ma te pepa. Ko nga mea i hiahiatia e au ki te whakamahi i nga pepa tae rereke e 2, te riipene, te kutikuti, te ruri, te pene. Ka mutu taku raranga i aku whenu pepa, ka mau ahau i tetahi whakaahua marama hei whakaatu i te otinga o te ahua o te ahua.

I decided to attempt the kick start. For this Te Reo Maori activity, I needed to create a weaving pattern using paper. I first watched all the videos to help me understand the activity. Once I finished watching all videos, I went back to the instructional video on how to weave using paper. The items I needed to use 2 different colour paper, tape, scissors, ruler, pencil. Once I finished weaving my strands of paper, I took a clear photo to show the finish result on how it looks like.

I found this activity fun because I was able to learn a fun but challengin actvity that is common in the Maori culture.

Summer Learning Journey | Week 3: Activity 6: Rainbow Collage

For this Summer Learning Journey activity, I have attempted the step it up. It is based on a story called ‘Nanny Mihi and the rainbow’. It’s about Nanny Mihi who makes a rainbow collage with her grandchildren using all the things they found at the beach, like shells, sea creatures, and pieces of nature. Once I finished listening to the story, I got started on this activity.

To complete this activity, I needed to create my own rainbow collage that is inspired by Nanny Mihi’s rainbow in the story. I decided to use coloured squares behind the images to help me form the images into similar formation of a rainbow. Some of the images I used were roses, oranges, lemons, leaves, etc.

I enjoyed doing this activity because I find making digital artworks fun and pleasnt, espically by using images to help create the artwork.

Summer Learning Journey | Week 3: Activity 5: Design your own surfboard

Today I have completed another Summer Learning Journey activity. The Summer Learning Journey is a program that helps students keep learning throughout the Summer holidays.

I decided to attempt the kick start. For this activity, I needed to design my own surfboard. I first watched all the videos to help me understand the activity. Once I finished watching the videos, I got started on the activity. To complete this activity, I needed to design a surfboard. The design I created included a boat, sun, clouds, and some wavy lines at the bottom of the surfboard. This design represents a nice sunny day on the ocean and the lines under the boat represent the waves of the ocean.

I found completing this activity fun because I was able to use my creativity and digital skills to help me create a unique design for my surfboard.

Summer Learning Journey | Week 3 | Activity 3: Maths Riddles

Today I have completed another Summer Learning Journey activity. The Summer Learning Journey is a program that helps students keep learning throughout the Summer holidays.

I decided to attempt the kick start. For this activity, I needed to solve some math riddles. I first watched all the videos to help me understand the activity. Once I finished watching the videos, I got started on the activity. To complete this activity, I needed to try and answer each riddle correctly. I made sure I read each questions and looked at the pictures carefully. After answer all the questions, I checked if they were correct on the answer slides. I was able to get all of the riddles correctly.

I found this activity challenging because although I was able to answered all of them correctly, I found some of them hard to solve.

Summer Learning Journey | Week 3: Activity 2: Poetry Slam Toru – A ‘Letter To’ Poem

Today I have completed another Summer Learning Journey activity. The Summer Learning Journey is a program that helps students keep learning throughout the Summer holidays.

I decided to attempt the kick start. For this poetry slam activity, I needed to write a ‘letter to…’ poem. I first watched all the videos to help me understand the activity. Once I finished watching the videos, I got started on the activity. To complete this activity, I needed to find a topic I can base my poem about. I decided to base my poem off a family memeber, which was an ancestor. I wrote this poem by writing questions I would ask my ancestor. Before I finished, I decided to translate my poem into Maori as my ancesetor I based this poem about is on my Maori side.

I found this activity interesting because I was able to learn how to write a new type of poem.

Summer Learning Journey | Week 2: Activity 10: Let’s Visit Mars

Today I have completed another Summer Learning Journey activity. The Summer Learning Journey is a program that helps students keep learning throughout the Summer holidays.

I decided to attempt the kick start. The task was to design my own Mars rover. I first watched all the videos to help me understand the activity. Once I finished watching the videos, I got started on the activity. To complete this activity, I needed to to use the shapes and/or line tools on the google draw template. The rover I designed was mostly made of shapes. Once I finished designing my rover, I needed to think of a name to give it. I decided to name it ‘Discovery’ as that’s it’s purpose on Mars, to discovery new things.

I found this activity fun because I was able to use my creativity to design something that could be useful one day.

Summer Learning Journey | Week 2: Activity 9: Smart Chips

Today I have completed another Summer Learning Journey activity. The Summer Learning Journey is a program that helps students keep learning throughout the Summer holidays. 

I decided to attempt the kick start. The task was to complete the cloze reading actvitiy. I first watched all the videos to help me understand the activity. Once I finished watching the videos, I got started on the activity. To complete this activity, I needed to fill in each gap with the correct words to the song. The song this activity was based on ‘A Pukeko in a Ponga Tree’ which is similaar to the song ‘The 12 days of Christmas’ but the gifts in the song are different. After I listened to the song, I filled in the gaps and I feel confident that I’ve chosen the right words.

I found this activity fun because I thought of this activity as a fun way to learn a new song.

Summer Learning Jounrey | Week 2: Activity 8: How Good is your Memory?

Today I have completed another Summer Learning Journey activity. The Summer Learning Journey is a program that helps students keep learning throughout the Summer holidays. 

I decided to attempt the kick start. The task was to pick a mnemonic and try to memorise it. I first watched all the videos to help me understand what mnemonics are. A mnemonic is any learning tool that helps you remember something, whether it’s simple or difficult. After watching the videos, I got started on the actvitiy.

I researched some mnemonics that would be simple enought to memorise. The mnemonic I chose was to help me memorise the planets in the solar system. The mnemonic is ‘My Very Easy Method Just Speeds Up Naming Planets’ which stands for ‘Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto’. I was able to successfully memorise the is mnemonic. Once I memorised this mnemonic, I displayed it onto a DLO to help hook others in to learn what mnemonics are.

I found this activity interesting because I got the opportunity to learn something new and be able to use that knowledge later on in the future.
